Principal Investigator

Niels-Christian Reichardt

Niels Reichardt, research group leader at CIC biomaGUNE, is a chemist by training with 22 years of experience in carbohydrate chemistry both in industrial and academic research, and over 17 years developing glycan and lectin microarray technology. Niels Reichardt received his PhD from the University of Konstanz, Germany. His postgraduate studies on projects in the field of synthetic carbohydrate chemistry were carried out at the Institute for Chemical Research of the CSIC in Seville. Afterwards, he had the opportunity to complete his training in organic synthesis at the Institute for Macromolecular Science and Engineering of the UniversityLouis Pasteur, Strasbourg developing methods for the synthesis of macrolides as protein kinase inhibitors. In 2004 he started working as a Research Scientist for Glycoform Ltd, Oxford, a biotechnology companydeveloping synthetic therapeutic glycoproteins. He has been Principal Investigator at CIC biomaGUNE since 2006. In 2008, together with Manuel Martin-Lomas he founded MDRenal, S.L., a biotechnology company developing tools for mass spectrometry based metabolomics, where he was Scientific Director until 2010; in 2016 he led the foundation of Asparia Glycomics, a glycoscience spinoff commercialising a series of technologies developed in the Glycotechnology lab. From 2018-2025 he was part of the steering group of the carbohydrate group of the Royal Spanish Chemical Society and has been a member of the scientific and organization committee of numerous national conferences and training events. From 2020-2024 he was part-time CEO/CSO of Asparia Glycomics and leading its transformation into a leading Spanish glycoscience CRO and service provider for glycan analysis and the custom synthesis of carbohydrates. In 2024 he moved to become Chief Scientific Officer of Asparia Glycomics. Since 2025 he is an external lecturer at Deusto University, Bilbao at the faculty of Medicine. His current research interests are centred on the synthesis of oligosaccharides of biological interest, immunoglycobiology, glycan based cell targeting and the development of diagnostic applications based on carbohydrate chemistry.
